Today is day six in Honduras and I have to say its not so bad. Aside from the bug bites and a few rough patches adjusting to the food its been nice. Yesterday I went to the beach and its absolutely the beautiful. This country has such beauty in it and its so green!
The down side is the poverty people have to live in here. I'm not sure if people just dont know better or dont care but the attitude here I've seen in teaching is very different.
I teach at a private school and the children actually pay for the priviledge or renting their books and yet my world geography class has a book from 1992 and the Soviet Union is still together! When you talk to the administartion all they say is "I know" and nothing changes. If you talk to the parents who are paying actual tuition money they say, "Talk to the administration." The result is you dont get new books and the kids are stuck.
I teach 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. The 7th graders are little hellions. Part of the problem is the classes are so loud because the building isn't air conditioned so there are these big fans running so its hard to hear. The other problem is the 7th grade class is just too big. They need to be broken up and I'm going to have to find a way to get the boys under control.
The 8th graders I love. There are a lot of them but they're not so bad. The 9th graders aren't bad either and the 10th graders are a small group so I hope to do some fun stuff with them.
Last week was my first week teaching ever and I was just kind of thrown in there. I'm hoping this week goes better. Last week wasn't bad, just a bit intimidating. I gave everyone homework so I'll see how that turns out and be able to see where everyone is.
Well pictures are soon to come. Thanks for reading.
